Copyright is a legal right that grants protection to the use of your work when you physically express your idea. You are granted copyright protection automatically as soon as you create your work including original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic work, including illustration and photography; original non-literary written work, such as software, web content, and music recordings and databases; sound and music recordings; film and television recordings; broadcasts; the layout of published editions of written, dramatic and musical works. It is not necessary for you to register your work to ensure your rights are protected by copyright.
Your work needs to be original and tangible to be protected by copyright law. "Orginal" means that your work must be the product of your own skill and labor or intellectual creation and should not just imitate the work of someone else. "Tangible" means that you need to have expressed your idea in a physical form, not just an idea you have had.

Your work can be marked with the copyright symbol (©), your name and the year of creation. The level of protection you have would not be affected whether you mark your work or not. Your work could be protected by copyright in other countries through international agreements, for example, the Berne Convention.
Copyright lasts a minimum of life plus 50 years for most types of written, dramatic and artistic works, and at least 25 years for photographs In most countries. The period your copyright work can be different from different types of work.
